Workshop & Safety
Lighting, dust collection, vacuums, and PPE — the unglamorous half of the shop that decides whether you enjoy being in it. None of it is exciting. All of it pays for itself.

What to look for
Light it like you mean it
Lighting is the highest-return upgrade in any workshop — lumens per dollar, and every job gets easier. Aim for even, shadow-free coverage at the bench before you buy anything decorative.
Dust is the slow tax
Fine dust settles on everything and into everything. A shop vacuum with the right filtration, used at the tool instead of after the fact, is the single biggest shop-health upgrade most people can make.
PPE you’ll actually wear
The best respirator, glasses, or hearing protection is the one that doesn’t get left on the shelf. Fit and comfort decide compliance — try before you stock up.
Lighting & work lights
Why it matters: you can’t measure, cut, or inspect what you can’t see. Overhead coverage for the room, task lighting for the bench — that order.

Dust control & cleanup
Why it matters: collect at the source and the whole shop stays cleaner — tools, lungs, finishes, everything. Check filter ratings and hose compatibility with your tools.

PPE: eyes, ears, lungs
Why it matters: safety glasses, hearing protection, and a decent respirator or dust mask cover nearly every workshop hazard. Keep them at the door so they’re the first thing you grab.

A straight note on safety
This page is buying guidance, not safety training. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions for your tools, wear the PPE the job calls for, and check your local codes and regulations. When in doubt, ask a pro — not a website.
Good to know
What’s the first safety upgrade for a new shop?
Lighting, then dust collection at the tool, then a PPE station by the door. In that order — you’ll use the lights every minute you’re in the shop.
Do I need a respirator or is a dust mask enough?
It depends on the work: basic dust masks suit light sanding; fine dust, finishes, and solvents call for a proper respirator with the right cartridges. Read the cartridge rating against what you’re actually doing.
Why don’t you list prices?
Prices change constantly, and we’d rather not show you a number we can’t stand behind. Check the retailer for today’s price and availability.
